Sophie Talks | Internet Friends

"They told you to never talk to people on the internet because the could be liars and ruin your life, but what they didn't tell you was that they could be some of the best people you ever meet."

On Friday, I'm off to Canada to visit my lovely friend Kelsey, and the week after I'm off to Indiana to visit another friend, Emily. Recently I've had people ask how I met them, and although Kelsey was technically a friend of a friend, in all honesty they were internet friends. Yep, internet friends. I know it's always said when we're younger not to talk to strangers, and that's one of the dangers of the internet, but I have 'met' so many friends on the internet, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

It all kicked off in the days of myspace, and then continued when we all moved over to twitter. These girls I'd become friends with were always there, at the other side of a computer. We would skype, we would chat all the time, and in all honesty I became closer to some of them than some of my other friends. It's hard saying that, because I have the most amazing group of best friends here, and I wouldn't pit any of them against each other, but at times these internet friends have stepped up and been there for me more than others.

One of the best and worst things about these friendships is that they all live in places that aren't anywhere near where I am. It's great knowing that I get to visit them in all these amazing places, but sometimes when you need a friend nearer, it sucks. A lot. Long distance friendships are a lot easier because of the internet, and things like whatsapp, because we can talk daily, but sometimes it can make you feel super lonely.

For any bloggers reading this - you guys are my internet friends too technically. A lot of you I've met through twitter, and through reading your blogs, and whether we've met or not in person, it's great that I can have so many of you as friends. It's a crazy concept to get your head round, and when I first started making friends through myspace around 8 years ago now, a lot of people did think it was suspicious and a lot could go wrong, but thankfully for me it didn't, and I have the best group of friends there could be, including my internet friends.

I'll hopefully be vlogging my trip and will be blogging about it when I'm home, but if you want to keep up with what I'm up to, then be sure to give me a follow on instagram and twitter.

  1. I've met some great friends online and I agree, they can become some of the best friends you ever had. They've actually outlasted most of my 'real life' friendships!

    Have a good trip!

  2. Same with some of mine! Sometimes it's funny that the people furthest away seem to care more than those nearby. And thanks, i'll be blogging about it when I'm back :)
